Newlyweds Jeff and Haila Troy are called in when a close friend is accused of murdering a society matron in his swanky photography studio high above the roar of Grand Central traffic. The day of the shoot hadn’t started well. First, there was a mysterious figure scrambling about in the darkroom, accompanied by the unmistakable odor of chloroform. Not long after the glamorously gowned models and their handsome escorts had finished the final color shoot of the day, an elegant silver carving knife from the sumptuously appointed dinner table was discovered plunged into the wealthy woman’s neck.

This engaging pre-World War II comedy of manners was first published in 1941 and is the second book to feature the Troys, one of the more appealing husband-and-wife sleuthing teams in the history of the genre. Today’s critics seem to agree. “The Troy series is well worth reading,” said Mystery News. “Stands the test of time…a joy to read,” agreed I Love a Mystery. “I loved it,” commented Reviewing the Evidence.
