It all starts when Jeff and Haila Troy take their cleaning woman’s seven-year-old son Chuckie to Central Park one Sunday afternoon to sail his toy boat on the lake. That’s where they meet the members of the Knickerbocker Model Yachting Club, including its Commodore, Austin Marshall, who is the victim of a seemingly perfect crime committed in full view of dozens of people on that sunny September afternoon. Jeff doesn’t believe for a minute that he can crack the case, but the sultry wife of one of the Knickerbockers thinks otherwise and pays him a handsome sum to do so. Her fee sends the Troys on a merry chase from Manhattan to Hoboken and back until finally all the pieces fall into place. This wisecracking, hard-drinking husband-and-wife team could hold their own any day with Nick and Nora Charles, and they are at their wittiest in this 1944 sparkling comedy of manners, the fourth in the series.
