Who—or what—is the mysterious figure that emerges from the grey mist to strike down the passengers on the final leg of a round-the-world trip? Is it the same shadowy entity that persists in leaving three matches outside Lady Marsh’s cabin every morning? And why does one flimsy negligee seem to pop up at every turn? When Carl Bray first heard things go bump in the night, she hardly expected to find a corpse in the adjoining cabin. Using up the last of her inheritance, Carla only wanted to have a little innocent fun and perhaps toy with the affections of some of the eligible bachelors on board. However, as the body count mounts, she finds herself the chief suspect in the murders.

Robert Arnold, a sardonic young man who joined the ship in Tahiti, takes an interest in the murders as well as in Carla. But if Robert is really interested in Carla and wants to help clear her of suspicion, why does he spend so much of his time courting other women on board.

First published in 1938, The Grey Mist Murders was the first—and the only book without "black" in the title—by the two Australian-born Little sisters, whose 21 wacky cozies featured independent young women like Carla who were averse to marriage—provided no housework was involved.
